The reason for Ayn Rand's enduring appeal over the decades goes beyond just the popularity of her hugely successful novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. She was an uncompromising champion of freedom, liberty, rational self-interest, and above all, reason. As a philosopher, she is best known for discovering a fully consistent system of philosophy, which she identified as the only one that allows people to live productive, guilt-free and consistently happy lives. She called her philosophy objectivism.
The ideas of Ayn Rand are particularly relevant today, as we see the world churn through an economic upheaval. We are constantly burdened by the threat of recession. Wherever we look, all we see are convoluted mixed economy systems. In the midst of this, the ideas of Atlas Shrugged--the novel in which Rand traces the effects of government hand-outs, increasing regulation, government force, and altruism on the minds of the people, and, eventually, the fate of a nation – contain crucial lessons for all of us.
The purpose of this group is:
- To be a platform where people interested in her ideas can come together, engage with each other, and savor discussions about her ideas.
- To present an opportunity, for those so interested, to study her ideas further, and examine their relevance in the Indian context.
- To spread her ideas across India. This would involve reaching out to people who already know about her and retain an interest in her philosophical system, as well as those people who have never heard of her, but might find value in examining aspects of her philosophy and applying it to the sphere of their lives.
- to be able to sustain this initiative in the long-run.
- Eventually, by means of these mechanisms, to bring about some change in the cultural, political and economic climate of India!
